WHAT IS A LUBRICATION SURVEY |
What Is a Lubrication Survey?
A lubrication survey — also called a lubrication program assessment or lubrication audit — is a systematic on-site evaluation of every aspect of your plant’s lubrication program. Our certified technicians assess the lubricants you are using, how they are stored, how they are applied, what your PM intervals are, and whether your equipment is showing signs of lubrication-related wear or failure.
The result is a complete report that tells you exactly what is wrong, what it is costing you, and what to fix first — ranked by return on investment.
What Our Lubrication Survey Covers
1. Lubricant Product Assessment
We review every lubricant currently in use across your plant — oils, greases, specialty lubricants, and penetrating fluids. We identify incorrect products, unnecessary duplicates, and opportunities for consolidation that reduce cost and purchasing complexity without sacrificing equipment protection.
2. Storage and Handling Review
Contamination at the point of storage is one of the most common and costly lubrication failures in industrial plants. We inspect your lubricant storage room, containers, transfer equipment, and labeling systems to identify contamination risks, cross-contamination hazards, and storage conditions that are degrading your lubricants before they ever reach your equipment.
3. Application Method and PM Interval Review
Over-greasing destroys bearings. Under-greasing causes premature wear. Wrong intervals waste lubricant and labor. We review your existing PM routes, grease quantities, relubrication intervals, and application methods — and recalculate correct intervals based on bearing size, speed, load, and temperature using industry-standard formulas.
4. Equipment Condition Assessment
Our technicians inspect lubricated equipment for visible signs of lubrication failure — grease purging, heat discoloration, seal damage, contaminated sumps, and incorrect oil levels. We document every finding with photos and include it in your survey report.
5. Oil Analysis and Sampling Program Review
If your plant runs an oil analysis program, we review your sampling intervals, sampling procedures, and how results are being acted on. If you do not have an oil analysis program, we recommend one — oil analysis is the single most cost-effective predictive maintenance tool available for lubricated equipment.
6. Lubrication Consolidation Opportunities
The average industrial plant uses 3 to 5 times more lubricant products than necessary. Lubricant consolidation — reducing your product count to the minimum required — cuts purchasing costs, reduces storage requirements, eliminates cross-contamination risk, and simplifies technician training. We identify every consolidation opportunity in your plant and quantify the cost savings.

- PM interval recalculations for every lubrication point
- Lubricant consolidation recommendations with projected cost savings
- Equipment condition findings with photo documentation
- Oil analysis program recommendations
- Prioritized improvement report ranked by ROI
- Executive summary ready for maintenance management review
- Optional follow-up support to implement recommendations
Industries We Serve
Newton Industrial Solutions has conducted lubrication surveys across a wide range of industrial environments:
- Manufacturing plants — automotive, aerospace, rubber, plastics, metal forming
- Food and beverage facilities — food-grade lubricant compliance, HACCP environments
- Pharmaceutical and biotech — GMP environments, clean manufacturing requirements
- Pulp and paper mills — high-contamination environments, large equipment populations
- Chemical plants — specialty lubricant requirements, hazardous area considerations
- Steel and metal forming — extreme pressure, high-heat lubrication challenges
- Textile and carpet manufacturing — high-speed spindles, precision lubrication
- Healthcare and institutional — HVAC systems, sterilization equipment
Why Newton Industrial Solutions — Not a Lubricant Distributor
Most lubrication surveys are offered free by lubricant distributors — ExxonMobil, Shell, Chevron, and others. There is a reason they are free: the survey is a sales tool designed to replace your current products with theirs.
Newton Industrial Solutions does not sell lubricants. We have no preferred brand, no sales quota, and no incentive to recommend anything other than what is genuinely best for your equipment. Our technicians hold ICML and STLE certifications in lubrication management — the highest independent professional standards in the industry.

FAQ SECTION |
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a lubrication survey and a steam trap survey?
A lubrication survey assesses your lubrication program — products, storage, application, and PM intervals for all lubricated equipment such as bearings, gearboxes, chains, and compressors. A steam trap survey specifically evaluates your steam system traps for failures that waste energy. Many plants need both. Newton Industrial Solutions offers both services and can combine them into a single site visit.
How long does a lubrication survey take?
Most industrial plant surveys take two to three days on-site. Large facilities with multiple buildings or 500+ lubrication points may require up to a week or more. We schedule around your production to minimize disruption and deliver your full report within 48 hours of completing the on-site work.
Do you sell lubricants after the survey?
No. Newton Industrial Solutions does not sell lubricants, equipment, or any products. Our main deliverable is the survey report and recommendations. This makes our findings completely unbiased — we recommend what your plant actually needs.
We already have a lubrication program. Do we still need a survey?
Yes — and this is the most common situation we encounter. Most plants have a lubrication program on paper that has drifted significantly from best practice over time. Incorrect intervals, wrong products, contaminated storage, and missed points are nearly universal. Our survey identifies the gap between your current program and what it should be, and quantifies the cost of that gap.
What certifications do your technicians hold?
Our lead technicians hold certifications from the International Council for Machinery Lubrication (ICML) and the Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers (STLE) — the two highest independent professional credentials in the lubrication industry.
Ready to Find Out What Your Lubrication Program Is Really Costing You?
Newton Industrial Solutions provides independent, certified lubrication surveys for manufacturing plants across South Carolina, North Carolina, and Georgia. Most clients see full ROI within one month from failure cost avoidance, reduced lubricant spend, and fewer unplanned failures alone.
